My research focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms of metabolic diseases (mainly Metabolic dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes) with particular focus on the alteration of metabolic fluxes and hormone secretion and action. I am leading a multidisciplinary group (biologists, chemists, mathematician) and we use state of the art techniques for a translational approach to the study of human physiology, e.g., mass spectrometry coupled with stable isotope tracers for the evaluation in vivo of glucose and lipids production and disposal, insulin resistance and insulin secretion; omics techniques as metabolomics, lipidomics, fluxomics and exposomics; imaging tools as MRI, CT and US to study body fat distribution (visceral, hepatic, cardiac, muscular) and cardiac function and PET to study organ metabolism in collaboration with many institutions in Europe and United States. I have been involved in several clinical trials that studied the mechanisms of action of antidiabetic drugs as agonists of PPAR-γ, PPAR α/ γ, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and insulin. Recently, I started studying the mechanisms of actions of environmental endocrine disruptors (like phthalates and bisphenols) and the level of exposure in the general population.
